Fanø was home to Denmark's largest sailing ship fleet, second only to Copenhagen. The ships transported goods across the seven seas, and the sailors were often away for several years at a time. The tile culture on Fanø is closely related to this golden age for the island. The tiles were used as ballast in the ships on journeys from Holland to Denmark. At home, the tiles were placed on the walls of the Fanø houses, creating the most beautiful patterns. Around the year 1900, the golden age of sailing ships was coming to an end, and thus, this beautiful ballast was also coming to an end. Fortunately, the tiles are still present on the walls of many Fanø houses and today are collectible items that are sold individually or as tile pictures.
