There was no male costume on Fanø. The seaman was the cosmopolitan, who was inspired by the international fashion and he bought his clothing in faraway harbours. Seamen from Jutland’s west coast have always sailed across the North Sea to England and Scotland. And this is undoubtedly where they have bought themselves a hand knitted Fair Isle sweater!

Construction: The sweater is knit in the round until 7.5 cm before the armhole, where a gusset is knit into each front under the sleeve in order to provide greater comfort. From the armhole, the sweater can be knit either in the round, or the work can be distributed into the back and the side, and then knit back and forth. The sleeves are knit from the top down by picking up stitches in the armhole and decreasing smoothly, finishing with the rib stitch border. Two sleeve patterns are provided - please pick the one you like the best.
